Promoted by Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, KAF - KUWAIT ARTS FORUM is an annual event dedicated to highlighting central themes in visual arts today internationally, as well as to fostering debate and dialogue on arts and culture across the Gulf Region.

 

Curated by Dutch author and artist Eric Broug, the 2020 KUWAIT ARTS FORUM focuses on Innovation in Contemporary Islamic Arts and Design. The 3-day forum features 8 talks, 1 keynote, 2 roundtables, and 6 workshops led by artists, designers, media creators and art professionals from Kuwait, the UAE, Syria, Egypt, Italy, Andorra, the Netherlands, Canada and the UK.

 

KUWAIT ARTS FORUM will shed light on the role of innovation in Islamic arts, design as they exist now in the twenty-first century. Invited speakers and artists will show and explain how Islamic art influences their work, and how they build on its rich visual heritage.

How can we innovate and stay connected to the Islamic arts heritage? The keynote will shed light on the role of innovation in Islamic arts and design in the twenty-first century.

TALK and Q&A: ISLAMIC ARTS BETWEEN CLASSIC AND MODERNITY - Jassim Al-Nasrallah

What are the differences between classic and contemporary calligraphy styles? Jassim Al-Nasrallah will guide participants through the basics of calligraphy art and its timeless fascination.

WORKSHOP: DRAWING USING RANDOM SHAPES - Mahmoud Tammam

The workshop will raise participants’ awareness of random ordinary objects and their forms while experimenting with drawing techniques.

EXHIBITION GUIDED TOUR: Haa. Can a single letter without a text be a means of expression? - Jassim Meraj

Participants will venture in a journey through the letter Haa and the vision of an eclectic calligrapher.

TALK and Q&A: MAKING MONEY THROUGH ART - Teakster

How can contemporary artists make their ends meet? Teakster will shed light on how to make an income at a time when commercial aspects are absent from the art debate.

WORKSHOP: MASTERING YOUR HANDWRITING- Part 1 - Jassim Al-Nasrallah

During the two-day workshop, participants will learn and practise Ruq'ah script. Renown Jassim Al-Nasrallah will teach how to master and perfect their daily handwriting.

WORKSHOP: MERGING FORMS INTO CALLIGRAPHY - Asrae Yazdani

Asrae will teach participants Kereshmeh Calligraphy, a handwriting style that fascinates everyone new to calligraphy, beyond meanings and readability.

TALK and Q&A: ART—WORK, A LOCAL PERSPECTIVE - Mohammad Sharaf

Mohammad will show how to combine typography and conceptual art while expanding the use of media to create thought-provoking visuals.

TALK CARD GAME: LOVE ME OR LOVE ME NOT - Claudio Cravero

Why do we love (or hate) contemporary art? Participants will engage with an open discussion around feelings of appreciation and rejection of art to learn some tools to familiarise with it.

TALK and Q&A: A HUMAN PERSPECTIVE ON ART - Ahmed Keshta

Do we need to learn art? Ahmed will explain the role that art plays in the relationship we establish with the shapes we are surrounded by.

WORKSHOP: INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC DESIGN - Eric Broug

Eric will show participants how to draw geometric patterns. No need to measure and no experience required; just participants’ curiosity for the beautiful forms that Islamic design has been teaching for centuries.

Where does abstraction lie in Arabic script and calligraphy? Yaman Al Baker will show how the search for innovation in Islamic arts leads to not-yet-codified territories.

Do you want to engage with the graffiti art-making? Join street artist Teakster to spray an outdoor mural inspired by Islamic geometric design and urban style patterns.

WORKSHOP: BEYOND WRITTEN ARABIC; AR-ABSTRACT - Yaman Al Baker

Where does the sense of attraction between the letters come from? Participants will play with words to interpret their meaning with ornamental patterns and geometric design.
